[{edit}] 1. Legacy
The Legacy Format is a fan-created alternate tournament format of the Legend of the Five Rings card game. Its aim is to allow a maximum number of cards to be playable simultaneously, while trying to achieve some sense of balance by removing some of the more abusive cards. The Legacy Format is managed by the Legacy Council at {The Jade Hand}.
Legacy Council : We are well aware at this point in time that the Samurai Edition rules will be soon available, redefining many elements of the Legend of the Five Rings card game. The Legacy rules and banned card list will be updated to version 2.0 at that time ; however, such rules will not be in effect at Origins 2007.
[{edit}] Rulebook
Legacy format games are to be played under the Lotus Edition L5R rules, including all amendments on expansions rulesheets, unless amended below.
[{edit}] Banned List
There are presently six cards that may not be played in Legacy Format decks.
Breach of Etiquette (Action)
Master of Five (Event)
Minor Oni Servant (Follower)
Rise from the Ashes (Spell)
Take the Initiative (Action)
The Shrine of Spirits (Stronghold)
[{edit}] Rules Interpretation Guidelines
Some older cards were written using an older wording template than modern cards. The following should always be kept in mind when interpreting older cards.
Targeting (All cards printed prior to Dawn of the Empire)
A card printed prior to Dawn of the Empire targets if it ever requires a choice to be made as to what it affects. It does not target if it never requires a choice.
Non-Gold Costs of Actions (All cards printed prior to Dawn of the Empire)
For cards printed prior to Dawn of the Empire, any part of an action's game text that precedes the words "to" or "for" is a cost of the action.
Non-Gold Costs of Actions (Certain older cards)
The following cards, by older rulebooks, have the cost of their action listed as the first sentence of the effect: Asahina Tsukiyoka, Ashlim (experienced), Bleeding the Elements, Bloodspeaker's Deal, Builders, Dark Energy, Darkness Within, Den of Spies, Forest Fire, Greensnake, Kaede Sensei, Mantis Marine Troops, Naga Spies, Nue, Oyuchi, Roshungi, Sabotage, Shiba Odoshi, Shugenja Students, Strong Words, Swifter Arrow, Toturi Sensei, The Prophecies, Woodland Reserves.
[{edit}] Rules Amendments
The following amendment are made to standard Lotus Edition rules.
Page 20, Cardinal Rules
The fifth cardinal rule ("All actions are usable only once per turn.") applies only to cards printed from Lotus Edition onward, and to previous cards that are legal from play in the Lotus edition environment..
(Such interpretations still being subject to any rules stated in this rulebook.)
Page 23, Keywords
The following additions are made to the list of implied keywords :
Any card with the Diplomat keyword is considered to have the Courtier keyword.
Any card with the Sailor keyword is considered to have the Naval keyword.
Any card with the Naga keyword is considered to have the Nonhuman keyword.
Any card with the Yoritomo's Alliance keyword is considered to have the Mantis Clan faction alignment keyword.
Any card with the Monkey Clan keyword is considered to have the Toturi's Army faction alignment keyword.
Any card with the Necromancer, Skeletal, Skeleton or Zombie keyword is considered to have the Undead keyword.
Any card with the Undead keyword is considered to have the Shadowlands keyword.
Important Note: Cards that make an explicit distinction between two traits above (The Daini, Kyuden Kitsune, Mantis House Guard) take precedence over the above rules. A personality with "Yoritomo's Alliance" is not considered to have "Mantis Clan" for the purpose of determining whether the personality will join a Kyuden Kitsune player.
Page 23-24, Faction Alignment
The following factions are legal in addition to the ten Lotus-legal factions :
The Brotherhood of Shinsei. Their Alignment Keyword is Monk.
The Ninja. Their Alignment Keyword is Ninja.
The Spirits. Their Alignment Keyword is Spirit.
Note that the only stronghold of the Spirits faction is banned in the Legacy format.
The Naga. Their Alignment Keyword is Naga.
Toturi's Army. Their Alignment Keyword is Toturi's Army.
NOTE : Clan alignment and "clan" are considered functionally equivalent to Faction alignment and "faction", unless a card specifically differentiate between the two.
Page 27, Winds
Note : There are nine Winds legal for play in the Legacy environment. They are Toturi Tsudao, Toturi Sezaru, Akodo Kaneka and Hantei Naseru (MRP of each five : Winds of Change) and Left Hand of the Emperor, Right Hand of the Emperor, Underhand of the Emperor, Voice of the Emperor and Black Heart of the Empire (MRP of each five : Lotus Edition).
Cards that specifically name a wind will only work with a wind of that exact name. For example, you may not target a player whose wind is the Right Hand of the Emperor with Bane of the Bastard (which target a player whose wind is Akodo Kaneka), and The Shogun's Barracks may not be used without the Imperial Favor if your wind is Akodo Kaneka.
Note that unlike the other winds, Daigotsu and the Black Heart of the Empire are considered to be the same wind.
Page 27, Sensei
Certain older cards refer to Sensei as a card within your fate decks. The rules no longer allow this. Ignore abilities and traits that refer to this ; they have no effect in the game.
Page 34, Fate Cards
Add the following to "Followers, Items and Spells" (now "Ancestors, Followers, Items and Spells.")
Ancestors
Ancestors represent the personal influence of long-dead heroes. They are played exactly as if they were followers, except :
-An Ancestor cannot be stolen or destroyed.
-An Ancestor may only attach to a personality with whom it shares a faction alignment keyword.
-Ancestors printed prior to Lotus Edition have an additional entering play cost of "Bow the attached personality".
Page 38, Card States
The following rule : "Any time a card is both face-down and not in play, it returns to its original state in all ways — all effects on it end, it loses all history of its use, etc." is amended as follow :
"…all effects on it end, except those that specifically affect out of play cards…" (eg, The Path Not Taken, The Kitsu Tombs)
Page 53, Dynasty Phase
Add the following ability :
"Reaction: Any number of time per turn, after bringing a personality into play during your dynasty phase: Attach an ancestor to him from your hand, paying all costs."
Page 54, Special Keywords and Card Traits
Add the following :
Double Chi
When a personality with the Double Chi trait focus in a duel, the focus value of the personality's focused cards is added twice to the statistic (even if it is not chi) used in the duel.
Page 55, Special Keywords and Card Traits, "Experienced and Experienced #"
Change "but different experience levels: Experienced, Experienced 2…" to "but different experience levels: Inexperienced, Experienced, Experienced 2…".
Personalities with the Inexperienced trait are treated as the lowest possible experience level, and may be overlaid by the non-experienced personalities of the same card title.
Page 61, Lobbying
Some older cards refer to "Giving a gift" or "Lobbying against a player" during a lobbying attempt. The rules no longer allow this. Traits and abilities that refer to such should be ignored; they have no effects in-game.
Page 62, Challenging and Dueling
Note: All duels are to be played as per the Lotus Rules.
Page 77, Errata and Clarifications
A Moment of Truth (Anvil of Despair) is distinct from A Moment of Truth (Time of the Void)
Corrupted Dojo (Fire and Shadow) is distinct from Corrupted Dojo (Winds of Change, Training Grounds)
Utaku Keyo (Dark Allies) is distinct from Utaku Keyo (Lotus Edition). Utaku Keyo Experienced (Test of Enlightenment) is the experienced version of the later.
Hida Yakamo : There are two separate personalities known as Hida Yakamo, both of which have received experienced versions. For purpose of Most Recent Printings, uniqueness and experienced versions, cards titled Hida Yakamo with the "Oni" keyword are to be treated as distinct from cards titled Hida Yakamo that have the "Hero" or "Champion" keyword. Hida Yakamo Experienced 2, Experienced 3, and Experienced 3 KYD are experienced versions of the personality with the Hero keyword.
[{edit}] Important Rulings
These are official rulings of the L5R rules team that we feel necessary to underline.
Gozoku Sensei
Paying a cost of discarding the Imperial Favor, even using alternate means (Hidden Catacombs, Commanding Favor) will count as discarding the favor for the purpose of ending the Sensei's ongoing effect.
